Eintracht Frankfurt started the 2026/27 Bundesliga season with a dramatic 3-3 draw away at Union Berlin. The Eagles led for long periods but conceded a late equaliser from Tim Skarke in the second minute of stoppage time.
The match at the Alte Försterei was spectacular from the outset. Emmanuel Latte Lath put the hosts ahead in the 3rd minute. However, Eintracht Frankfurt hit back immediately. Younes Ebnoutalib turned the game around within two minutes with goals in the 10th and 11th minutes. The score at half-time was 2-1 to the visitors, who had nearly 60% possession in the first half and kept Union pinned back for long periods.
How did Noah Atubolu's debut go?
New Frankfurt goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, who is 24 and on loan from SC Freiburg, had a difficult start. The first Berlin goal went past him early on. As the game progressed, he showed strong reactions, especially in the second half when Union became more offensive and forced him into several saves. His defender Robin Koch, the captain and defensive leader, had plenty to do. Jeremiaha Maluze also made his Bundesliga debut for Eintracht, despite originally being planned for the second team.
What does the result mean for the table?
With the one point from this game, Eintracht Frankfurt currently sits in 6th place in the Bundesliga table. Their record after one match is zero wins, one draw and zero losses. The team has scored three goals and conceded three, leaving them with a goal difference of zero. In the early title race, the Hessen are now two points behind leaders Bayern Munich. Manager Adi Hütter, who previously coached Eintracht Frankfurt from 2018 to 2021, returned home with a point. His Berlin counterpart Mauro Lustrinelli celebrated his Bundesliga debut as a head coach. He was pleased with the fighting spirit: "Der Team-Spirit hat mir heute unglaublich gefallen. Unsere Organisation hat noch nicht so richtig funktioniert." For Berlin, new signings Zeno van den Bosch, Michel Aebischer and Emmanuel Latte Lath provided fresh impetus, although Aebischer received a yellow card and came close to a second.
How did the game conclude?
In the 67th minute, Younes Ebnoutalib seemed to have secured the win for Eintracht Frankfurt with his third goal of the day. "Das ist gut für meinen Kopf, gibt mir Selbstbewusstsein. Jetzt heißt es trotzdem: Gas geben, nicht darauf ausruhen," said the hat-trick hero after the match. But Union Berlin did not give up. Leopold Querfeld made it 2-3 in the 79th minute. Then, in stoppage time, Tim Skarke produced a spectacular backheel shot to make it 3-3, sending the Alte Försterei into raptures. Querfeld also provided the assist for that late goal.
What's next for Eintracht Frankfurt?
Adi Hütter's team must quickly process the two points that slipped away. The next Bundesliga fixture is already on Sunday, 6 September 2026, when Eintracht Frankfurt host FC Augsburg at home. Augsburg started with a defeat and are currently in 11th place. All upcoming fixtures can be found on our fixtures schedule. Before that match, the transfer window closes on Tuesday.
