Eintracht Frankfurt has sold goalkeeper Michael Zetterer to Leeds United for a reported transfer fee of five million euros. The 31-year-old moves to the Premier League this summer of 2026. This ends the SGE's collaboration with the keeper after just one year, during which he made 22 Bundesliga appearances for the club. Frankfurt had signed him from Werder Bremen for a similar fee in the summer of 2025. The club finished the 2025 season in seventh place with 42 points and a goal difference of 54:54.
Why did Frankfurt sell Zetterer?
The sale of Michael Zetterer is a direct consequence of the restructuring of the goalkeeping department at Eintracht Frankfurt. The club had already secured a new number one by signing Noah Atubolu from SC Freiburg. Atubolu is set to become the new first choice between the posts. This decision left only a backup role for Zetterer, who achieved an average Kicker rating of 3.43 last season. The move to England now offers him a chance for more playing time, even though he is initially planned as the number two behind new first-choice goalkeeper James Trafford at Leeds. At Leeds United, Michael Zetterer signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2029. Manager Daniel Farke sees him as the experienced backup for young James Trafford. Zetterer's departure may not be the last in Eintracht Frankfurt's goalkeeper ranks. According to media reports, Kaua Santos, who was originally intended as backup for Noah Atubolu, could also leave the club. This would mean a complete overhaul of the goalkeeping position, following the arrival of Atubolu as the new starter. From a financial perspective, the transfer is a break-even deal for Eintracht Frankfurt. Thus, the SGE realizes neither a profit nor a loss from the transaction. However, the received sum can be used for other reinforcements in the squad to optimize the team for the upcoming season.
